Colourful Seafront Planting Design

This design was commissioned on behalf of the clients elderly mother. She no longer had the mobility or strength to go out and garden herself but loved to sit by the floor to ceiling windows and look at the garden with the ocean as the backdrop. Being one road back from the ocean and a very exposed site with an established dragon tree as the only taller plant, these plants need to be tough, they would need to be able to take full sun, strong wind and air borne salt. The client’s mother also requested lots of colour. The solution was to use a lot of succulents for form, structure and colour and to mix a few, attractive natives in to the mix too.

There were two other distinct sections of this project, it was actually three planting plans in one. The clients mother had a courtyard out the front of the property which was very protected and easy for her to get to so we replanted this with lots of more traditional, pretty planting including transplanting some sentimental Roses that her late husband had planted 20 years ago. This area had it’s own little microclimate as it was tucked away between the house and the garage so was protected from the strong wind. The other request was to improve the ‘curb appeal’ of the front through the planting. We went with a coastal palette of very hardy, low maintenance plants.
